Pallet Lumber Processing
Southern Packaging manufactures pallet components from hardwood logs, pine logs, and cants in our on-site saw mills.
Round wood is processed through our on-site saw mills and scragg mills. The saw mill processes larger diameter round wood into pallet stock using circular saws, edger saws, multi-trim saws, gang saws, and band saws. The scragg mills processes small diameter round wood into pallet stock using the same type equipment as the sawmill.
Square wood (cant) is green hardwood or pine material manufactured in our sawmill or purchased from other sawmills in a four state area. All square wood is cut up into pallet components utilizing chop saws, gang saws, band re-saws, circular trim saws, dedusters, notchers, and automated stackers.
Assembly, Heat Treatment
Kiln Drying & Mold Treatment
Once raw materials are processed into pallet components (deck boards, stringers and blocks), they are nailed together in one of the 10 automated, computer assisted Viking Nailing Machines. Specialty orders of pallets, skids, and crates are hand nailed to meet customer needs.
Pallets are processed in our heat treatment units to sanitize them for suitability in export markets. Currently our two heat treatment chambers and six kilns can treat 25-30 truckloads of pallets per day. IPPC requirements are achieved and fully inspected by Timber Products Inspection, Inc. Certified heat treated pallets are a significant service in meeting our customers needs, to adhere to ISPM-15 regulations. Both locations are ISPM-15 certified. Additionally, we can kiln dry pallets and treat pallets with an EPA certified water-based product suitable for use in all industries, including food. This water-based product is used to prevent and retard the growth of mold on pallets.
